Where are the best areas for students to live in Sheffield?
Sheffield is widely regarded as one of the most student-friendly cities in the UK, populated with approximately 60,000 students and two major universities. Where you choose to live can seriously shape your uni experience. Whether you want a thrilling night life, a quiet study night in, or affordable rent, below are the top student areas in Sheffield.

Crookes –
Crookes is the classic student area, full of independent shops, and nice takeaways, all still within a walking distance of campus! This area is best suited for students attending University of Sheffield, and those who want the full student experience. But why do students love Crookes… With the area having a huge student population, it will be common for you to make new friends in your new area, by spending time in the local pubs or enjoying a night in your new home! The only downside of the area is the hills (and you will feel it).
Broomhill -
The area with a good balance of study and student life, Broomhill is a popular area to those who want convenience without constant chaos, by enjoying spending time at local cafes and having a quiet pint at local pubs. Most residences are within a 15-minute walk of the University of Sheffield, allowing students to save on transport costs and easily access the city centre and night life, for those who thrive for the nightlife. With several hospitals in close proximity, the area is advantageous for those studying medicine. While sometimes, it can be more expensive than nearby areas like Crookes, its convenience and community atmosphere make it one of the most desirable locations for students in Sheffield.
Ecclesall Road – “Eccy Road”
Known as one of the most famous student streets, Ecclesall Road is well known to be packed with bars, restaurants, and shops, adding a busy and social vibe to the area. The area is a close proximity to both Universities and the city centre – travel by enjoying a nice walk or catching a short bus ride. If you are outgoing, and love the nightlife, Ecclesall Road is the place for you; with pubs such as The Nursery Tavern, The Lost and Found and The Irish all being right on your doorstep!
City Centre –
The city centre of Sheffield is the most convenient living area for students. With most locations being in a walk distance, the busy, modern city provides convenience for students studying at both universities. Living in the city centre means shops, libraries, gyms and nightlife are all on your doorstep, allowing for a seamless blend of study and daily life. Modern flats and student studios are commonly found in the city, great for those who would like to rent by themselves.
Sharrow–
Sharrow is popular because it hits the student “sweet spot”: because it’s cheap, close, social, and convenient. That’s why it consistently shows up as one of Sheffield’s main student areas. It is also the home to Dyson Place - a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly dining and shopping courtyard tucked away just off Sharrow Vale Road. Whilst the area is close to both Uni and nightlife, the rent is considered more budget friendly. Sharrow is also within walking distance of Sheffield Hallam University (approx. 9–32 minutes) and a short commute to the University of Sheffield. The area has a great meet up point as Endcliffe Park, one of Sheffield's most popular green spaces, is located in Sharrow, providing a great place for leisure and socialising. The area hosts the annual Sharrow Festival, a celebration of local culture, music, and food.
London Road-
London Road is a popular area for students to live as it considered more affordable for rent, compared to more trendier student areas like Ecclesall Road. You often get a bigger, older house which carries more character for the price, good for if you have a budget but still want a spacious room. Like most, the area is within a walking distance or a short bus ride to both universities, saving money on transport. London Road is known as one of the most multicultural streets in Sheffield as it’s packed with various establishments offering food from around the world. You do not need to rely on the city centre when living on London Road, as the area is populated with supermarkets, pharmacies, gyms, and local shops. It’s described as busy, vibrant, and diverse as there’s a mix of: students, young professionals and families in the local community so it feels active and social.
Kelham Island-
Kelham Island is often recommended as a good place for students in Sheffield—but it depends on what kind of student lifestyle you want. The area is only a short tram ride or walk from the universities and the city centre, making the area not quite as student heavy, which some may prefer. Kelham Island is good if you want your independence and a slightly more “grown-up” vibe. Packed with independent bars, cafes, and restaurants, it’s known for a relaxed, social atmosphere rather than chaotic student nightlife. Places like food halls, craft beer spots, and brunch cafes are a big draw, ideal if your social life revolves around food, drinks, and chill hangouts. The area has transformed from old industry into a creative hub with events, markets, and music and it’s often described as one of the “coolest neighbourhoods” in the city. Kelham Island can be more expensive than typical student areas as there are fewer traditional student houses (more flats/apartments).
